You moved into your own apartment – everything looks pretty much perfect. The apartment is in a good location, cosy, sunny, with good neighbourhood and above all – it’s yours. But there is one tiny detail – the living room is a bit smaller than you wanted. However, you decided on this place, because all other advantages prevailed.

You are now facing the task of furnishing the living room. You want to arrange a cosy rest area where you can relax with your family. You also want to keep comfortable communication routes between furniture (e.g. easy access to balcony doors or chest of drawers) despite the “compact” size of the room. You may be thinking: “how am I going to fit all this in the room?” Don’t worry – all you need is a bit of ingenuity and imagination. Besides, many people say that smaller living rooms are much cosier, and it is easier to build a nice, friendly atmosphere in them with accessories and arrangement.

Build a space by playing with colours and light

Small rooms like bright, cold colours. To start with, you can use a few tricks to optically enlarge the room. Paint the walls a bright colour (choose colder shades – greys, blues, white broken with grey), but slightly darker than the ceiling. Leave it in cold white.

Avoid decorating walls with vertical stripes – they will make the walls optically narrow, and dark floors in shades wenge wood. A good idea is to use mirrors to make the room seem bigger. You can hang a mirror, e.g. over a table or a sofa, and thus optically give it space.

Also remember to build the mood and atmosphere of the room with light. The lighting should be chosen to highlight the colour of the walls. A small living room will seem bigger if you paint your walls in cold shades, and these require cold lighting. The lamp will then highlight the expected colour of the walls and the room itself will seem more spacious.

Time for lounge furniture

Space is limited in a small living room, so it needs to be skilfully organised. Such rooms will be go great with smaller two-seater sofas e.g. paired with an armchair. A corner sofa that is too big can overwhelm with its size, making the room appear smaller – so it’s better to pick one that is more compact.

Furniture for a small living room should not be too high – choose models that do not have tall backrests. This will make the living room seem bigger and taller. Sofas and corner settees on high legs will look good in such space. They appear visually slimmer and thus bring more lightness into the living room. At the same time, they have another important feature – the slim legs make it easier to clean underneath, which can be very important when you don’t have much room to manoeuvre the vacuum cleaner freely in a small living room.

Where to place the furniture? There are several different possibilities. If you choose a corner sofa bed, you’ll have more seating space than on a traditional sofa, and you’ll have more space in the middle of the living room. At the same time, you will create a rest area without the need for armchairs. Then you just need a stool as an extra seat.

Stools are a very convenient solution, as they can be slid under the table so that they do not take up unnecessary space when they’re not in use. And if the stool is equipped with a container, you can use it as a storage space for small items.

A smaller corner sofa set up in a corner of the room will not take up much space, and if it converts into a bed, it will additionally provide space for guests to spend the night. This will make the daytime zone also a zone for occasional sleeping. A corner sofa equipped with a bedding box will be good for storing a duvet, blanket and pillows in a comfortable way.

Another idea for arranging a rest area is to create a set of a sofa paired with a matching armchair and stool. Such furniture can be traditionally placed under the wall or – if space allows – around a central point, such as a table, and a chest of drawers or a bookcase can be placed under the wall.

Modern sofas and folding sofas have nicely finished backs, so they can be easily placed in the middle of the living room. In addition, such an arrangement will be conducive to conversations – everyone will be able to look at one another freely, which will foster interaction between household members.

Instead of a traditional set of a sofa plus two armchairs, you can also choose two small sofas and place them opposite each other, then use the stools as additional seats.

Less is better

When arranging a small living room, it is worth remembering one important principle – in the case of small areas, minimalism is the way to go. So, be careful about accessories, because many different trinkets will unnecessarily clutter the space. The less, the better. This also applies to all kinds of decorations – choose light, simple and minimalist furniture (this applies to both box furniture and upholstered furniture).
